System boundaries
A short reference for locating the boundary at which independently changing parts need an explicit contract.
The boundary
A system boundary is useful when two parts can change, fail, or be operated independently. The boundary is not only a box in a diagram; it is a contract about what one part can assume from another.
A practical test
Ask whether a change can be released, retried, or recovered without coordinating every other component. If the answer is no, the boundary may be too implicit.
